There’s a box made of sturdy white oak There’s a hole six feet in the ground They started driving those nails boys in the coffin the moment I left town A martyr to the cause of circumventing the law //Just an outlaw too willing to die A child of King James and Remington Living out the great American lie I’ve pulled the trigger too many times Read too many paperbacks that only cost a dime And I’ve seen visions that would make Daniel swoon and all the glorified lose their crown I’ve just a swindler dealin’ cards till dawn Just a fool gamblin’ away with the guts to play for blood With an ever watchful eye and my Colt at my side I’m not willing to be their pawn Chorus: It’s a mudshot lineup, It’s a reserved death It’s black aces and eights, just the hand of fate that I’ve been dealt I’ve come seeking my fortunate, not wages, through the barrel of a gun All those years of ramblin around finally caught up and I can no longer run I’ve played the deuce, tangoed with the serpent and seen flames engulf the Rio Grande I’ve been talkin’ to the man from Galilee but he’s nowhere to be found I took the gamble, drank the dark nectar And it looks my time has come Bested by another rounder, and his quick sidearm

Lay It Bare 03:34
Some gamble their lives on the gavel Some gamble them with lead If you’re feeling hard up and desperate Lay down them jack o'diamonds before you’re dead Some like to drift through destruction And take all they can get If you’re feeling mighty low well I got some medicine that will help you forget Some swing from the gallows pole Some stare down the shaft of a gun Ain’t no light from heaven shining on you when livin’ on the run Some like to go a chasin’ wild ponies Thinking they're sharp as a knife You can’t outrun short haired women nor can you escape eternal strife Chorus: Hey there old fella: whatcha got hiding up your filthy sleeve? I don’t want to call it, I’m a betting machine Lay it bare on the table Nobody better try to cross me Some spend their money on cheap whiskey Some on a six pack of beer Well the rich they can eat all they want and they still can’t get their fill the poor man can’t beat the odds Unless they approach the table to play Roll up your sleeves buckaroo, roll the dice, it’s a brand new day You can go all in if you’re feeling lucky If you think a change is gonna blow your way Well you can live the life of a rounder If you don’t mind what the preacher say
3.
Killer Rose 03:56
I met her at the buck horn saloon, lost in a desert haze, in the blazin’ month of June Lust and desperation took hold, what were two hard-up souls to do? With her jet black hair, north country drawl, blue eyes that could stare you down, Rose could kill em all I was sick of doing straight time, I was actin’ a fool possessed by her charm Chorus: She’ll make you beg and cry She’ll take you for one final ride she’ll make you beg and cry Rose is a killer in disguise Little did I know she fell in a bad way took on some debts that can’t be repaid / The bandits longed to see her blood soaking the desert willow with its crimson stain Many times I have prayed that she lay those bastards in their graves We’d make our getaway, leave San Juan behind, we’d head south for the border (and we did) It was in Guerrero I was forsaken little did I know she was double-dealing I was shot in the side, tied up and left to rot deceived by her bewitching lies In the light of day I was stripped of my possessions, and she escaped on my prize stallion and I twisted like a weasel in a sack to tear free, but in the end I bled out begging for morphine (and I begged) on the steps of the chapel where she left me for dead I saw the vultures circling up above, and death rear its ugly head I called on my savior and the saints with my last breath "Forgive this outlaw, absolve these sins and erase all my debts”

Don’t you weep no tears for me darlin don’t you take it too hard dry your teary eyes I’m preparing for my final ride Over the great divide So saddle up the pale horse ready him for the open trail I’ll be with you always if memory serves you well Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, you know these old bones just get the best of us I’m a son of the soil, just a member of this land I got to return six feet under, for all to go as planned If I had my choice I spend all my money on beer Instead the cancer that's eating away Causing me so much fear When I’m called up yonder Will I find the trail blazed all the way? A place to camp and lay down my weary head At the close of day?
6.
You know I can’t afford to hang around this junk town anymore Spent most of my life laying around stoned on dirty floors The road stretches out for miles beyond all I’ve ever called home If I leave tonight the life I might save, just might be my own The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t At least you know the mess your getting in, and when the warranty is up I’ll keep lugging this boulder up the hill past all these gravestones have I seen too much sorrow to ever rest these weary bones? There’s fistfights in the kitchen, two steppin’ in the honky tonks and bars Tappin’ veins and shootin’ up every night till we’re coughing up blood Sick of waking up with these poison headaches, regretting the night before, Of what we said and what we swore, honey, I just can’t recall Spent too many tortured mornings lost and lonely cryin’ over you It’s over now, there is no returning, Iguess I’m forever blue I’m gonna pack up all of my troubles, leave the past behind I guess I’ll head west past Salina and try to ease my worried mind
7.
Last night entranced in a spell saw bodies lined along the trail cold as clay The mesquite rose up in flames and the dead cried out their names through the veil the serpent slithered away and the scorpion stung its prey and down the towers we built, down they fell blood and stones scattered the fields wanderin was the ghost of Paul Revere and an eagle did lament its being born Chorus: Fire and Blood, Fire and Blood, Across this land Heard the roll of the buffalo as thunder that rumbled real slow they were busy storming heaven's door saw my hands withered and worm and that rugged old glory torn it was flying without purpose in the wind from shore to shore, my spirit soared You could hear that death bell tollin the cries of all our slaughtered kin they were lamenting all our sins but we're too distracted ever repent and mourn them Come gather round you fellas let me tell you a tale of how I had the most peculiar dream Oh I saw our ruination of this great and mighty nation and it starts within the hearts of you and me
8.
When I leave this old dreary world behind Don’t let the wolves make an end of me See that I’m buried right if the ground is hard wait until the night Chorus: I’m done for, I’m all played out I’ve reached the end of the trail Pull off the saddle and let me go It’s time to bid me farewell There’s no need for a costly tomb or a shaft of stone Lay me six feet deep, beneath where the buffalo roam Let wildflowers bloom ‘ver my bones And let God’s starry sky shine on I hope in life, I sure shot straight, And when I reach the pearly gates I pray that I’m accounted for And that we will meet on that golden shore

Reviews:

“Dig on this music, from Timothy Rye. Some of these songs he has shared with me in their rough form over dms, and I liked them because they reminded me of some of those dark stories from outlaw country I would hear from my father's collection. The production is stellar, and Scoutknife's work brought out the full depth of the rawness in Tim's storytelling and playing. It's worthy. This album has the soulful moan of Kris Kristofferson with the dark honesty found in Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" and Coward of the County," and The Highwaymen's "Highwayman".” - Gene Smith
